Michael Silverman, MD FACEP is chair of emergency medicine at the VHC Health, formerly the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA.  He has authored numerous textbook chapters and original research papers and lecturerd at the American College of Emergency Physician’s annual meeting.  He and his EDs have won several awards for quality and patient satisfaction.  He was the director of the Alteon-MidAtlantic leadership academy and for many years, and also served as the company’s chief performance officer. 

Dr. Silverman is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School (1994) and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1997), where he served as chief resident.  In 2024, following his passion for leadership development, Dr Silverman became certified in Leadership Coaching for Organization Performance through American University, and is a member of the International Coaching Federation.

He is the author of Director’s Corner: Lessons in Emergency Medicine Leadership and Management (Plaster Publishing 2014).  His book is based on his popular monthly column, “Director’s Corner,” that he’s been writing for Emergency Physician’s Monthly since 2008.  He also serves as an executive editor for Emergency Physician’s Monthly.  

Upon completion of residency, Dr Silverman joined the emergency physician team at St Agnes Healthcare in Baltimore, MD.  He started his administrative career shortly thereafter as the operations director and became the associate medical director.  In 2006, Dr Silverman became the chair of emergency medicine at MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, MD. While at Harbor Hospital, he had the opportunity to be an NFL RSI Sideline Physician at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens, and was the Medical Director for the Baltimore Stopover of the Round the World Volvo Ocean Race.

Academic appointments included Instructor of Emergency Medicine (part-time) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine while working in the emergency department at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was also the Fellowship co-director of a joint TeamHealth-Johns Hopkins Emergency Medicine administrative fellowship.

Dr Silverman has been recognized twice as an Affiliate Medical Director of the Year.  The first time was in 2009 by TeamHealth and the second time was in 2021 by Alteon Healthcare.  It is highly unusual to be recognized by two different companies for this award. 

Dr. Silverman has been active with the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians throughout his career.  He first served on the board as an emergency medicine resident.  Since then, he has served in almost every role, including multiple terms on the board of directors, as an ACEP councilor, and representing Maryland ACEP on state task forces. Following a two year term as president, he is currently the immediate past-president of the chapter.
